How to Trade with Other Collectors on GoCollect

It is very important to note... GoCollect does not take an active role in monitoring trades made between our users. We simply provide a great platform for facilitating trade negotiations. Please read our Terms of Use for detailed information.

What is a trade?

GoCollect has created a unique trading platform that allows collectors to trade physical items with one another using our online negotiations platform.

Imagine a simple, face-to-face trading scenario...

Two young boys are sports card collectors that each purchased a few packs of baseball cards. While chewing on the gum from their packs they show one another what they got. The one boy says to the other, "Hey, I'll give you my Mark McGuire card for that Nolan Ryan you just got." The other boy says, "Sure, but only if you throw in that Ken Griffey, Jr. too." The boy quickly responds saying, "I can't give up my Ken Griffey, Jr., but I'll give you the Mark McGuire card and the fifity cents change I have in my pocket." To which the other boy responds, "Awesome, let's do it." The two boys make the trade and end with a hand shake. Simple, right? The GoCollect trading platform allows them to do the same thing, without sitting face-to-face.

How does it work?

Good trading starts with good Tradelists. When you add an item to your Collection, it is important that you also consider ticking the box stating your willingness to trade that item. When you add an item to your Tradelist, your willingness to trade that item will be advertised on that item's details page (Under the For Trade tab). When a collector comes along that wants to acquire that item, they can see a list of everyone that has it available. They will be able to then access not only that item in your Tradelist, but all of your Tradelists and Wishlists. They can then propose a trade with you. By proposing a trade they can match the items in your Wishlists to the items in their Tradelists to find items that may help to facilitate the trade. The trade initiator can assemble one or more items involved in the trade, setup a proposal expiration, establish Terms of Trade and then formally pass the trade proposal over to the other user (the trade recipient). The recipient can then review the details of the trade and determine whether or not they find that trade proposal acceptable. If they would like to proceed with the trade, they can Accept the Proposal and the two traders can then handle the actual transaction between themselves. If the trade recipient is not interested in trading with the initiator, they can cancel negotiations at any time. However, if the recipient wants to alter the proposal, they can assemble a counter offer and pass it back to the initiator. At that point, the initiator then becomes the recipient and the whole cycle repeats until negotiations come to and end. This may all sound a little confusing, but after you've done it once, you'll be a pro. It's easier than it sounds!

What types of trades can the system facilitate?

Traders can offer one another any combination of items and/or cash within the proposal. If the traders involved both collect items from different collections, they can even cross-trade items. For example, let's assume Trader 1 has comic books that Trader 2 wants... and Trader 2 has DVDs that Trader 1 wants. It is not necessary to stay within a single collection when offering items for trade. Therefore Trader 1 can offer his comic books in exchange for Trader 2's DVDs.

Traders can even propose the addition of cash involved in a proposal. If one user has more value in their items, they may request that the other trader include cash to make the trade more fair.

And finally, the trading platform can also act as a "Make an Offer" system. In this type of proposal, one trader would give up only cash while the other would give up one or more items. This is helpful when one trader wants item(s) that the other owns, but doesn't have items desired by the other party. A simple cash offer can be made to complete the trade.

It's easy once you try it!

To the best of our knowledge, there's nothing else like this currently available to collectors. It feels foreign the first time you do something, but you'll find this to be a very simple tool for acquiring the items you desire and making new connections with fellow collectors.
